Injection pump tester TP-3

The TP-3 injection pump tester is used to diagnose the Bosch fuel injection pumps type MES and HDK. These pumps can be found in many makes of cars. The TP-3 tester is equipped with original plugs for fuel injection pumps used in VW, AUDI, SEAT, SKODA cars. If you need to diagnose the pumps in other makes of cars, it is possible make use of a universal end bearing in mind that the cables to be used need to have the appropriate conductivity and cross section parameters. The TP-3 can be used for a number of tests and measurements described below. It also enables the diagnosis and assessment of pumps by means of a comparative method.

  • This is one of the few testers, which makes it possible to run the engine without a controller and vehicle electronics; thanks to which, it is possible to determine quickly whether the cause of malfunction results from the failure in the injection pump or the electronics controlling the engine.
  • It diagnoses without dismantling the electronically controlled injection pumps of Bosch VE EDC MES HDK used, among others, in BMW, Citroen, Ford, Mercedes, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda cars.
  • The TP-3 tester can also be used to adjust the pumps on the test table.
  • It performs tests of dosing actuators, potentiometric and inductive position sensors, the temperature controller and the adjustor of the injection start and the shut-off valve.

Functions of the TP-3 tester:

  1. The circuit test

After selecting the pump circuit tests, check the continuity of the following circuits:

    - Circuit of the position sensor of the dosing actuator,

    Result:
"good" - the circuit of the position sensor of the dosing actuator has a continuity,
"damaged" - no continuity of the position sensor of the dosing actuator circuit,

    - Circuit of the coil of the dosing actuator,

    Result:
"good" - the circuit of the coil of the dosing actuator has a continuity,
"damaged" - no continuity of the coil of the dosing actuator,

    - the circuit of the coil of the advance spark ignition,

    Result:
"good" - the circuit of the coil of the advance spark ignition has a continuity,
"damaged" - no continuity of the circuit of the coil of the advance spark ignition,

    - the circuit of the coil of the shut-off valve,

    Result:
"good" - the circuit of the coil of the shut-off valve has continuity.
"damaged" - no continuity of the circuit of the coil of the shut-off valve.

    - fuel temperature sensor circuit,

    Result:
The temperature sensor resistance is regarded to be the test result.

  1. Executive tests

After selecting the pump tests, the next stage is to examine the following elements:

    - fuel shut-off valve,
    - advance spark valve,
    - dosing actuator

    Tests are performed automatically.

In case of the fuel shut-off valve and advance spark valve, the test consists in a cyclical (the number under the test name stands for the number of repetitions of the test) switching on and off. When the valve is good and the circuit has continuity, clear tapping sound can be heard.

The actuator test is a bit different. During the test the time the actuator needs to achieve its maximum position is measured (labelled as "G") and then time the actuator to move to its minimum position (labelled as "D"). The test is repeated three times.

During the test, the actuator tapping should also be audible to prove its correct operation. The given above times are the real times measured by a properly-working HDK pump. The extension of "G" time indicates the additional resistance at the dosing actuator, whereas a significant shortening of this time could mean that the spring is too weak or broken. The extension of "D" time indicates the additional resistance or weak or broken spring in the dosing actuator. Shortening of "D" time indicates little resistance and good working order of a dosing actuator.

  1. Start-up.

By means of this test, you can start the engine with a MES or HDK pump or without the electronics of the car. In this way, it is easy to detect a fuel injection pump fault or motor controller fault. After selecting the start-up option, the screen displays the current state of the valves (fuel shut-off and spark advance valves) and the position of the dosing actuator. The valves and fuel charge are chosen to allow the engine to start.

The fuel shut-off valve, labelled as "Start", may be set in the "on position” (switched-on) which means that the valve is open or in the position labelled as “off” " (switched-off), which means that the valve is closed. The spark advance ignition valve labelled as "Ignition" may be set in three different positions: delayed, 50% or advance.

Changes in the valves are done by choosing the appropriate valve (symbol > to the left of the name of the valve) with the "up-down" buttons and then "right-left" buttons to change their status. The position of the dosing actuator labelled as "dose" is given in percentages and can be changed by means of the regulation potentiometer. The end of the start-up phase and bringing the engine to a dead stop takes place after pressing the "stop" button.

After the start-up screen appears, the tester is ready to try to start the engine. To do this, it is necessary to turn on the starter by turning the ignition key. When the engine will not start, the fuel charge may be increased by means of the regulation potentiometer. The single fuel charge shall not be significantly increased, because the engine right after the start-up phase could go directly to high revolutions. The charge shall be increased by a few percent and then it is possible to make an attempt to start. In case the engine reaches high revolutions after the start-up phase it is necessary to reduce the charge immediately or use the "STOP" button to stop the engine.

If you increase the charge up to 100% and the engine still does not start, it is necessary to check the battery voltage during start-up (can not be lower than 10V) and if necessary, the external power supply shall be used.

  1. Cleaning.

This option forces a proper controlling of the dosing actuator which results in its cleaning. It can also be used as a supportive tool while cleaning with the ultrasound washer. The controllers are selected in the way which makes it possible to clean the actuator in all possible positions.

The test is performed automatically and continues until the "stop" button is pressed.
