It quite often happens that customers who come to the workshops complain that their car engine runs unevenly, which is referred to as a "misfire". At this point, the mechanic faces quite an old question: "Which is the cause, the incorrect spark or the incorrect amount of fuel?" From our point of view, it is easier first to verify the proper operation of the ignition system instead of checking the correct preparation and delivery of the fuel-air mixture. That is probably why most mechanics in such a position check the ignition system first. However, contrary to our expectations, the accurate checking of the ignition system is not as easy as it seems and requires time-consuming measurements (e.g. by means of an oscilloscope) for each cylinder individually. If the workshop has at its disposal a modern oscilloscope, there is a chance to carry out the test efficiently and to detect the fault. Most workshops cannot afford to buy the modern and expensive at the same time diagnoscopes. Bearing those workshops in mind, DeltaTech Electronics Company has launched a device called the MV-4 High Voltage Monitor. This device allows a quick check of the "spark quality" in the four cylinders at a time. It does not require loosening of ignition plugs or removing the high-voltage cables. It needs just fastening of the alligator clips on the high voltage cables, switching on the MV-4 device and observing the LED controllers, which light at the moment there is a spark. On the basis of these indications it is easy to identify the cause of the misfire, which results from the malfunction of the ignition system. An important feature of this device is the possibility of simultaneous observing and comparing the "spark" in the four cylinders. It is much easier and less time consuming than observing the monitoring oscilloscope waveform of each cylinder individually. Of course, the assessment by means of the MV-4 monitor is not as accurate as by means of an oscilloscope, but in most cases it is sufficient, and most importantly, a lot less complicated than the measurement and interpretation of the oscilloscope waveform.
The MV-4 monitor is fitted with a sensitivity adjuster, which makes it possible to check the cylinders and put them in order from the highest to the lowest energy value of a spark. To do this, it is enough to observe the indications of the LED controller. At the same time the sensitivity rate shall be changed from the smallest to largest. First, the controller corresponding to the highest spark energy will flash. Next, the controllers corresponding to the cylinders of the lower spark energy will flash one by one. The most desired situation takes place, when the controllers corresponding to all engine cylinders start flashing at the same time. This demonstrates the correct operation of this part of the ignition system, which is responsible for producing the spark. In addition, by means of the MV-4 monitor it is possible to determine whether there is an short-circuit of high-voltage cables and determine which one is damaged as well as to find the short-circuit of the spark plug.
