What is the purpose of the VNTT-1?

VNTT-1 tester is designed to perform diagnosis of actuators (electric valves, actuators) of VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) turbochargers. These actuators changes position of turbocharger vanes in the same way as in turbochargers where turbine geometry was changed using vacuum.

Many car manufacturers use the same drivers to control other elements of the engine accessories, such as intake air control valves or EGR valves. Also in these cases VNTT-1 enables verifying their operation.

Which turbocharger actuators are supported by VNTT-1 tester?

The device supports actuators manufactured by HELLA (not all), SIEMENS, MITSUBISHI. The range covers significant part of the actuators currently used in automotive industry.

1. HELLA actuators.

The tester supports turbocharger actuators part number 6NW 008 412, 6NW 009 420. This is called 'actuator with driver' because of included DC motor driver for controlling integrated DC motor. This actuator can be found in cars like Mercedes, Ford 1.8 TDCi and 2.0 TDCi, BMW 2.0, Jeep Cherokee 3.0 CRD.

The following images show the exterior and interior of this actuator:

VNTT-1 tester does not support HELLA drivers with part numbers 6NW 009 206,
6NW 009 550 and others without integrated motor driver, their appearance are shown in the images below

2. SIEMENS actuators.

The tester supports all turbocharger actuators manufactured by SIEMENS. These are used among others in Audi/VW 2.7 TDI and 3.0 TDI, Mercedes.

The image below shows appearance of typical SIEMENS actuator.

3. MITSUBISHI actuators.

These tester supports all MITSUBISHI actuators. These are used among others in BMW 320d.

From what time and in what brands are turbocharger actuators used?

Turbochargers with actuators were introduced in 2003 and since then they are widely used in car brands such as Audi, VW, Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Jaguar, Jeep, Chrysler and others.

What features has VNTT-1 tester?

The tester has two basic functions.
The first one allows the driver to set actuator lever to any position throughout the range of its movement. Position settings is done via potentiometer knob. The second feature enables performing periodic movements from minimum to maximum position.

What can I check with VNTT-1 device?

VNTT-1 device allows to check the uniformity of lever movement as well as mechanical parts and the electronic actuator itself. As turbocharger manufacturers state, the actuator is an integral part of turbine and therefore it cannot be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire turbine unit. With VNTT-1 tester it is possible to determine, sometimes simple cause of turbocharger failure and then try to repair it

Who should use VNTT-1 tester?

VNTT-1 tester can be successfully used in businesses involved in regeneration of turbochargers as well as in car garages offering wide range of repairs in order to diagnose cause of turbocharger malfunction.

Are original actuators connectors included?

The device does not include original actuators connectors. Instead, it has an connector which allows connecting the actuator using universal tips, that can be used in any of supported actuators. Detailed description of actuator connection is included in user manual.

What kind of power supply is required?

VNTT-1 tester can be powered from a DC supply with voltage from 11.. 15V. Its power cables are terminated with alligator clips to allow simple connection to 12V car battery. Of course, the device can be powered from any stabilized DC power supply with minimum 4A current capability.

Where can I see how the tester works?
